The ski season is here

As demonstrated by the lack of posts to my website, we have gone into full ON ski mode since November. Well, there’s the skiing, and then there were the holidays, and new years eve, and my general laziness when it comes to writing posts. But still, skiing has been taken up most available free time since our last bike ride on the Colorado Trail. We have been having the greatest early season skiing since we moved to Colorado. The resorts have been opening new terrain quicker than ever before, and I think most resorts had everything opened (including back bowls) well before Christmas.

There have already been several powder days, and yesterday was yet another magnificent powder day. We left Boulder with snow coming down on us, and it was still snowing when we returned to Boulder. It was dumping on us all day long, with one exception: The very first chair ride up put us ABOVE the snow clouds in a beautiful windless sunny snow paradise. We snapped a couple of pictures here and skied down into the snow clouds again. Never to see the sun again that day. It was a bit surreal, but a great experience, nevertheless. Damn, I love skiing!

Teton Pass

The third and last video from last years trip to Jackson is from Teton Pass. Booting up Teton Pass is always a good workout and a lot of fun. Interestingly enough, we stayed in Teton Village, but not once did we ski Jackson Hole Resort. We found better snow is these other locations…

Mary’s Nipple

The second day of the trip to Jackson last year was spent hiking Mary’s Nipple. Repeatedly. The Nipple had been closed for a couple of days because of weather, and when it finally opened up, the conditions were perrrrfect.

Yet another long ski weekend

Wow! So much fun! This past weekend was the 3rd installment of the “Stick it to the little man” ski trip. This year we were back in Wyoming, but we actually never skied Jackson Hole resort. We instead ventured to Grand Targhee for two days, did some backcountry skiing off Teton Pass and finished up with a jaunt in Teton National Park up past Taggart lake. Good times! Lots of video and pictures to follow, but for now, a quick run-down of this years group.

Commando Run

The “Commando Run” is a 15 miles ski trek the Army’s 10th Mountain Division used for training back in the 40′s. It is by many considered a must do back country trek in Colorado, so this past Saturday Jen and I joined a group to get’er done. It was a great outing with a bunch of cool old geezers. Check out Jen’s write up for the verbiage.

The views along the Commando Run were stunning and even more so on our beautiful blue bird day…

Vasquez Cirque. Finally.

Jen and I have been eying the Vasquez Cirque at Winter Park ever since they put in the Eagle Wind chair two years ago. This past weekend, on Valentines Day, the stars finally aligned. Well, more precise, the ski patrol at Winter Park deemed the snow conditions good enough and the avalanche risk low enough, that they opened the gate to the Vasquez Cirque access road.

We hiked in twice. First time we skied down just south of the Alphabet Chutes and into the “100′s”. The second time we went in right about where the South and West Headwall’s meet, and from there into yummy pockets of snow in the South Basin. Wow! The runs in Vasquez Cirque prompted a little video taking assembled into the collage below.
