Down here in Boulder at the foothills of the mountains, the snow has pretty much melted away by now, and the mountain bikes have started calling, so Saturday we headed up into the mountains to check out the conditions of the trails at higher elevation. We of course brought Strelka along!
We started out a little above 7,000 ft and I was surprised to find as much snow as we did, even in places that had been getting quite a bit of sun. That said, we did find some dry, sandy, rocky sections, but they were mostly only short steep sections with a clear south aspect.

Hiking by Button Rock Mountain
Our destination for the day was Button Rock Mountain, but we never made it all the way up. A little above 8,000 ft as we were going around to the north side of the mountain, the snow drifts were getting bigger and bigger and it became difficult to travel through them. If not for us, then for Strelka who despite being quite the trooper had problems getting through the continuing larger and larger mounts of snow. It will be a little while before we ride our mountain bikes at this elevation!

Knee deep in snow
Despite not getting to the top of the mountain we had a great hike in a great place with great views, and while the clouds were building up all around us, we had a clear view of the sun for the most parts of our hike.
